Commit:

2e4be0d011f2 ("x86/show_trace_log_lvl: Ensure stack pointer is aligned, again")

was intended to ensure alignment of the stack pointer; but it also moved
the initialization of the "stack" variable down into the loop header.

This was likely intended as a no-op cleanup, since the commit
message does not mention it; however, this caused a behavioral change
because the value of "regs" is different between the two places.

Originally, get_stack_pointer() used the regs provided by the caller; after
that commit, get_stack_pointer() instead uses the regs at the top of the
stack frame the unwinder is looking at. Often, there are no such regs at
all, and "regs" is NULL, causing get_stack_pointer() to fall back to the
task's current stack pointer, which is not what we want here, but probably
happens to mostly work. Other times, the original regs will point to
another regs frame - in that case, the linear guess unwind logic in
show_trace_log_lvl() will start unwinding too far up the stack, causing the
first frame found by the proper unwinder to never be visited, resulting in
a stack trace consisting purely of guess lines.

Fix it by moving the "stack = " assignment back where it belongs.

There's companies that collect thousands of die() messages per week,
but w/o a prompt in dmesg, it's hard to write scripts to collect and
analize the reasons.

Add a uniform "Oops:" prefix like other architectures.

tried to align the stack pointer in show_trace_log_lvl(), otherwise the
"stack < stack_info.end" check can't guarantee that the last read does
not go past the end of the stack.

However, we have the same problem with the initial value of the stack
pointer, it can also be unaligned. So without this patch this trivial
kernel module

Upon function exit, KMSAN marks local variables as uninitialized. Further
function calls may result in the compiler creating the stack frame where
these local variables resided. This results in frame pointers being
marked as uninitialized data, which is normally correct, because they are
not stack-allocated.

However stack unwinding functions are supposed to read and dereference the
frame pointers, in which case KMSAN might be reporting uses of
uninitialized values.

To work around that, we mark update_stack_state(), unwind_next_frame() and
show_trace_log_lvl() with __no_kmsan_checks, preventing all KMSAN reports
inside those functions and making them return initialized values.

In particular, the report currently says (for example):

That

is quite confusing as RIP value is 0, not -42. That -42 comes from
"regs->ip - PROLOGUE_SIZE", because Code is dumped with some prologue
(and epilogue).

So do not mention "RIP" on this line in this context.

Change this to use the normal interface in order for consistency as we
clean up all access_ok() implementations.

This changes the limit from TASK_SIZE to TASK_SIZE_MAX, which Al points
out is the right thing do do here anyway.

The callers have to use __access_ok() instead of the normal access_ok()
though, because on x86 that contains a WARN_ON_IN_IRQ() check that cannot
be used inside of NMI context while tracing.

The check in copy_code() is not needed any more, because this one is
already done by copy_from_user_nmi().

the guts of the exit(2) system call. The second use is to terminate
a task after something catastrophic has happened like a NULL pointer
in kernel code.

Add a function make_task_dead that is initialy exactly the same as
do_exit to cover the cases where do_exit is called to handle
catastrophic failure. In time this can probably be reduced to just a
light wrapper around do_task_dead. For now keep it exactly the same so
that there will be no behavioral differences introducing this new
concept.

Replace all of the uses of do_exit that use it for catastraphic
task cleanup with make_task_dead to make it clear what the code
is doing.

As part of this rename rewind_stack_do_exit
rewind_stack_and_make_dead.

the user space code of other processes, which is obviously bogus.

It either manages to dump where the foreign task's regs->ip points to in a
valid mapping of the current task or triggers a pagefault and prints "Code:
Bad RIP value.". Both is just wrong.

Add a safeguard in copy_code() and check whether the @regs pointer matches
currents pt_regs. If not, do not even try to access it.

While at it, add commentary why using copy_from_user_nmi() is safe in
copy_code() even if the function name suggests otherwise.

Printing "Bad RIP value" if copy_code() fails can be misleading for
userspace pointers, since copy_code() can fail if the instruction
pointer is valid but the code is paged out. This is because copy_code()
calls copy_from_user_nmi() for userspace pointers, which disables page
fault handling.

This is reproducible in OOM situations, where it's plausible that the
code may be reclaimed in the time between entry into the kernel and when
this message is printed. This leaves a misleading log in dmesg that
suggests instruction pointer corruption has occurred, which may alarm
users.

Change the message to state the error condition more precisely.

Arista's switches uses quite common setup with rsyslog, where only
urgent messages goes to console (console_log_level=KERN_ERR), everything
else goes into /var/log/ as the console baud-rate often is indecently
slow (9600 bps).

Backtrace dumps without registers printed have proven to be as useful as
morning standups. Furthermore, in order to introduce KERN_UNSUPPRESSED
(which I believe is still the most elegant way to fix raciness of sysrq[1])
the log level should be passed down the stack to register dumping
functions. Besides, there is a potential use-case for printing traces
with KERN_DEBUG level [2] (where registers dump shouldn't appear with
higher log level).

After all preparations are done, provide log_lvl parameter for
show_regs_if_on_stack() and wire up to actual log level used as
an argument for show_trace_log_lvl().

show_trace_log_lvl() provides x86 platform-specific way to unwind
backtrace with a given log level. Unfortunately, registers dump(s) are
not printed with the same log level - instead, KERN_DEFAULT is always
used.

Arista's switches uses quite common setup with rsyslog, where only
urgent messages goes to console (console_log_level=KERN_ERR), everything
else goes into /var/log/ as the console baud-rate often is indecently
slow (9600 bps).

Backtrace dumps without registers printed have proven to be as useful as
morning standups. Furthermore, in order to introduce KERN_UNSUPPRESSED
(which I believe is still the most elegant way to fix raciness of sysrq[1])
the log level should be passed down the stack to register dumping
functions. Besides, there is a potential use-case for printing traces
with KERN_DEBUG level [2] (where registers dump shouldn't appear with
higher log level).

Add log_lvl parameter to show_iret_regs() as a preparation to add it
to __show_regs() and show_regs_if_on_stack().

dump the Code bytes when /proc/sys/debug/exception-trace is enabled. It
prints 'Code: Bad RIP value.' instead.

This was broken by a recent change which made probe_kernel_read() reject
non-kernel addresses.

Update show_opcodes() so it retrieves user space opcodes via
copy_from_user_nmi().

side. In result, some users as sysrq/kdb/etc are doing tricks with
temporary rising console_loglevel while printing their messages. And in
result it not only may print unwanted messages from other CPUs, but also
omit printing at all in the unlucky case where the printk() was deferred.

Introducing log-level parameter and KERN_UNSUPPRESSED [1] seems an easier
approach than introducing more printk buffers. Also, it will consolidate
printings with headers.

Introduce show_stack_loglvl(), that eventually will substitute
show_stack().
