1Redis 3.2 release notes 2======================= 3 4-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5Upgrade urgency levels: 6 7LOW: No need to upgrade unless there are new features you want to use. 8MODERATE: Program an upgrade of the server, but it's not urgent. 9HIGH: There is a critical bug that may affect a subset of users. Upgrade! 10CRITICAL: There is a critical bug affecting MOST USERS. Upgrade ASAP. 11-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12 13 14================================================================================ 15Redis 3.2.1 Released Fri Jun 17 15:01:56 CEST 2016 16================================================================================ 17 18Upgrade urgency HIGH: Critical fix to Redis Sentinel, due to 3.2.0 regression 19 compared to 3.0. 20 21Hey, this is Redis 3.2.1, and this release should bring some grain of 22maturity to Redis 3.2. The list of commits following this note will tell 23you the details, but the main things addressed in this release are the 24following: 25 261. A critical bug in Sentinel was hopefully fixed. During the big 3.2 27 refactoring of Redis Sentinel, in order to implement connection sharing 28 to make Sentinel able to scale better (few Sentinels to monitor many 29 masters), a bug was introduced that mis-counted the number of pending 30 commands in the Redis link. This in turn resulted into an inability to talk 31 with certain Redis instances. A common result of this bug was the inability 32 of Redis Sentinel to reconfigure back the old master, after a failover, 33 when it is reachable again, as the slave of the new master. This was due 34 to the inability to talk with the old master at all. 35 362. BITFIELD bugs fixed. 37 383. GEO commands fixes on syntax errors and edge cases. 39 404. RESTORE now accepts dumps generated by older Redis versions. 41 425. Jemalloc now is really configured to save you memory, for a problem a 43 change in the jemalloc configuration did not really survived when the 44 3.2.0 release was finalized. 45 466. TTL and TYPE command no longer alter the last access time of a key, for 47 LRU evictions purposes. A new TOUCH command was introduced *just* to 48 update the access time of a key. 49 507. A bug was fixed in redis-cli, that connected to the instance running on the 51 port 6379 if there was one, regardless of what was specified. 52 538. TCP keep alive is now enabled by default. This should fix most ghost 54 connections problems without resulting in any practical change in otherwise 55 sane deployments. 56 579. A Sentinel crash that could happen during failovers was fixed. 58 59And of course, more minor things that you can read in the detailed log 60below. There are still reported bugs for 3.2 that were not fixed in this 61release, but nothing critical AFAIK, and I wanted to release this one ASAP, 62so likely a new release will not be too far. 63 64Enjoy, 65Salvatore 66 67+------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 68| config set list-max-ziplist-size didn't support negative values, unlike config file 69| By oranagra, 2016-05-22 20:35:14 +0300 70+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 71https://github.com/antirez/redis/commit/8207e828043e37a0d7e058530d2886bb3ff395ff 72 73 74 src/config.c | 6 +++--- 75 1 file changed, 3 insertions(+), 3 deletions(-) 76 77+------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 78| Fix Sentinel pending commands counting. 79| By antirez, 2016-06-16 19:24:34 +0200 80+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 81https://github.com/antirez/redis/commit/6ad0371c9b4206a7a6692d50c9a301457baf9b6d 82 83This bug most experienced effect was an inability of Redis to 84reconfigure back old masters to slaves after they are reachable again 85after a failover. This was due to failing to reset the count of the 86pending commands properly, so the master appeared fovever down. 87 88Was introduced in Redis 3.2 new Sentinel connection sharing feature 89which is a lot more complex than the 3.0 code, but more scalable. 90 91Many thanks to people reporting the issue, and especially to 92@sskorgal for investigating the issue in depth. 93 94Hopefully closes #3285. 95 96 src/sentinel.c | 1 + 97 1 file changed, 1 insertion(+) 98 99+------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 100| redis-cli: really connect to the right server. 101| By antirez, 2016-06-16 17:23:31 +0200 102+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 103https://github.com/antirez/redis/commit/58f1d446c35e8fe62df7c9ebe10f3c40a386c022 104 105I recently introduced populating the autocomplete help array with the 106COMMAND command if available. However this was performed before parsing 107the arguments, defaulting to instance 6379. After the connection is 108performed it remains stable. 109 110The effect is that if there is an instance running on port 6339, 111whatever port you specify is ignored and 6379 is connected to instead. 112The right port will be selected only after a reconnection. 113 114Close #3314. 115 116 src/redis-cli.c | 7 +++++-- 117 1 file changed, 5 insertions(+), 2 deletions(-) 118 119+------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 120| Remove debug printing 121| By Jan-Erik Rediger, 2016-05-21 13:50:01 +0200 122+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 123https://github.com/antirez/redis/commit/b6007b324b81dbd4ffe519b3bdb19ab65fbb407f 124 125 126 src/redis-cli.c | 3 --- 127 1 file changed, 3 deletions(-) 128 129+------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 130| RESTORE: accept RDB dumps with older versions. 131| By antirez, 2016-06-16 15:53:57 +0200 132+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 133https://github.com/antirez/redis/commit/f592b4d3178963878084a522b4fd050772c335ae 134 135Reference issue #3218. 136 137Checking the code I can't find a reason why the original RESTORE 138code was so opinionated about restoring only the current version. The 139code in to `rdb.c` appears to be capable as always to restore data from 140older versions of Redis, and the only places where it is needed the 141current version in order to correctly restore data, is while loading the 142opcodes, not the values itself as it happens in the case of RESTORE. 143 144For the above reasons, this commit enables RESTORE to accept older 145versions of values payloads. 146 147 src/cluster.c | 2 +- 148 1 file changed, 1 insertion(+), 1 deletion(-) 149 150+------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 151| CLIENT error be valid with 52 bits per 310coordinate, moreover the line was: 311 312 if (step > 26) step = 25; 313 314So a step of 26 was actually already used, except when one of 27 was 315computed (which is And with the new release there is a new 542format for the changelog. Now it is composed of a "letter" like the one 543you are reading, followed by all the commits composing the release for people 544interested in the details. 545 546There are a few changes between the latest release candidate of Redis 3.2 547and the final 3.2.0 release. The main ones are the obvious bug fixes you 548can find detailed below, also a few new things: 549 550Critical bugs fixed: 551 552* There was a problem in the way a cluster instance loaded the AOF that 553 could cause data written via scripts to be lost during reshardings. 554 555New things: 556 557* There is a new very powerful BITFIELD command. Check the documentation 558 here: http://redis.io/commands/BITFIELD 559 560* CONFIG GET is allowed during the loading of the dataset. 561 562* The DEBUG command have new features and can show an help with DEBUG HELP. 563 564* redis-cli show hits about the commands arguments to the right. 565 566* GEORADIUS got a STORE / STOREDIST option to store the result into a target 567 key (as as orted set) instead of reporting it to the user. 568 569* Redis Cluster replicas migration now works in a slightly different way. In 570 the past a slave could migrate only to a master that used to have slaves 571 in the past (and if there was still trace of this information). Now instead 572 if a new slave gets at least a slot, and at least one other master in the 573 cluster has a slave, then the new master is considered a valid target for 574 replica migration. So if it will be orphaned and there is a spare slave 575 it will get one. 576 577* CLUSTER SLOTS output now includes the node ID (in a backward compatible 578 manner). 579 580* A lot of bug fixes you can read in the commits details below, with the 581 authors that kindly provided many useful patches. Thanks. 582 583As usually what "stable" means is that we are confident the release is mature, 584however do your tests before putting it into production in your environemnt 585as it's fresh meat anyway. 586 587Cheers, 588Salvatore 589 590+------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 591| Cluster: don't check scripts key slots during AOF loading. 592| By antirez, 2016-05-05 23:37:08 +0200 593+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 594https://github.com/antirez/redis/commit/746e1bebb4baf876c1e8cd2fe2d468a1c41e5dc3 595 596 597 src/scripting.c | 6 ++++-- 598 1 file changed, 4 insertions(+), 2 deletions(-) 599 600+------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 601| redis-cli: remove debugging message. 602| By antirez, 2016-05-05 18:05:37 +0200 603+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 604https://github.com/antirez/redis/commit/3907b059280898c6340b53982b3b65957535da7c 605 606 607 src/redis-cli.c | 1 - When a new or old master which is empty and without slaves, 953are assigend with their first slot, if other masters in the cluster have 954slaves, they are automatically considered to be targets for replicas 955migration. 956 957 src/cluster.c | 36 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++- 958 1 file changed, 35 insertions(+), 1 deletion(-) 959 960+------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 961| Test ZINCRBY return value. 962| By antirez, 2016-05-02 08:57:30 +0200 963+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 964https://github.com/antirez/redis/commit/1101b515c73dcb0ff4a868ba38a91dcebb5b85cc 965 966 967 tests/unit/type/zset.tcl | 6 ++++++ 968 1 file changed, 6 insertions(+) 969 970+------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 971| redis-cli preferences and rc file support. 972| By antirez, 2016-04-13 13:58:30 +0200 973+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 974https://github.com/antirez/redis/commit/bbf93108ef2a7ac7bd53e26c96bf838f7c5e72df 975 976 977 src/redis-cli.c | 102 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++---------- 978 1 file changed, 85 insertions(+), 17 deletions(-) 979 980+------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 981| redis-cli hints. 982| By antirez, 2016-04-13 12:34:14 +0200 983+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 984https://github.com/antirez/redis/commit/3fd3fca0dd38cb21c900e4ba98e3d41f333335aa 985 986 987 deps/linenoise/linenoise.c | 8 +++++++ 988 deps/linenoise/linenoise.h | 2 +- 989 src/redis-cli.c | 53 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 990 3 files changed, 62 insertions(+), 1 deletion(-) 991 992+------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 993| Linenoise updated again (hints support). 994| By antirez, 2016-04-12 23:39:18 +0200 995+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 996https://github.com/antirez/redis/commit/34354473ffe8d60b80acdbc8c16b194f8bbd70a0 997 998 999 deps/linenoise/README.markdown | 176 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++- 1000 deps/linenoise/example.c | 10 +++ 1001 deps/linenoise/linenoise.c | 55 ++++++++++++- 1002 deps/linenoise/linenoise.h | 15 +++- 1003 4 files changed, 248 insertions(+), 8 deletions(-) 1004 1005+------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1006| Linenoise updated. 1007| By antirez, 2016-04-06 13:37:27 +0200 1008+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1009https://github.com/antirez/redis/commit/58229cd766fa02f399267310b5b488aac2c55a6a 1010 1011As a side effect, cat commands.txt | redis-cli now is able to handle 1012lines more than 4096 bytes. 1013 1014 deps/linenoise/linenoise.c | 60 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++------------ 1015 1 file changed, 45 insertions(+), 15 deletions(-) 1016 1017+------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1018| ae.c: Fix delay until next timer event. 1019| By antirez, 2016-04-04 14:08:16 +0200 1020+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1021https://github.com/antirez/redis/commit/29645f1f44926ac2662ed768fe1e369775a30b66 1022 1023This fix was written by Anthony LaTorre. 1024The old code mis-calculated the amount of time to wait till next event. 1025 1026 src/ae.c | 21 ++++++++++++--------- 1027 1 file changed, 12 insertions(+), 9 deletions(-) 1028 1029+------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1030| ae.c: comment to explain why we have a useless maxId check. 1031| By antirez, 2016-04-04 12:23:10 +0200 1032+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1033https://github.com/antirez/redis/commit/aa79c1f1c1d288e4cc2c0f4689ad01488678bf9d 1034 1035 1036 src/ae.c | 6 +++++- 1037 1 file changed, 5 insertions(+), 1 deletion(-) 1038 1039+------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1040| Fix ae.c to avoid timers infinite loop. 1041| By antirez, 2016-01-08 15:05:14 +0100 1042+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1043https://github.com/antirez/redis/commit/0b69c9865619b54b75576e67aaafe7b018734bec 1044 1045This fix was suggested by Anthony LaTorre, that provided also a good 1046test case that was used to verify the fix. 1047 1048The problem with the old implementation is that, the time returned by 1049a timer event (that is the time after it want to run again) is added 1050to the event *start time*. initial implementation. 1177| By antirez, 2016-02-25 23:31:45 +0100 1178+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1179https://github.com/antirez/redis/commit/761a77287107ce53dbf4755f1435cc9660b6c86d 1180 1181The new bitfield command is an extension to the Redis bit operations, 1182where not just single bit operations are performed, but the array of 1183bits composing a string, can be addressed at random, not aligned 1184offsets, with any width unsigned and signed integers like u8, s5, u10 1185(up to 64 bit signed integers and 63 bit unsigned integers). 1186 1187The BITFIELD command supports subcommands that can SET, GET, or INCRBY 1188those arbitrary bit counters, with multiple overflow semantics. 1189 1190Trivial and credits: 1191 1192A similar command was imagined a few times in the past, but for 1193some reason looked a bit far fetched or not well specified. 1194Finally the command was proposed again in a clear form by 1195Yoav Steinberg from Redis Labs, that proposed a set of commands on 1196arbitrary sized integers stored at bit offsets. 1197 1198Starting from this proposal I wrote an initial specification of a single 1199command with sub-commands similar to what Yoav envisioned, using short 1200names for types definitions, and adding control on the overflow. 1201 1202This commit is the resulting implementation. 1203 1204Examples: 1205 1206 BITFIELD mykey OVERFLOW wrap INCRBY i2 10 -1 GET i2 10 1207 1208 src/bitops.c | 506 (Salvatore Sanfilippo) 1409* [NEW] Redis proctected mode: this feature improves Redis security and makes 1410 harder to run Redis in a configuration that is unsecure because no 1411 firewalling was used in order to protect Redis from external accesses. 1412 See this Reddit post for more info: https://www.reddit.com/r/redis/comments/3zv85m/new_security_feature_redis_protected_mode/ (Salvatore Sanfilippo) 1413* [NEW] Cluster/Sentinel tests now use OSX leak to perform leak detection 1414 at the end of every unit. (Salvatore Sanfilippo) 1415* [NEW] Detect and show server crashes during Cluster/Sentinel tests. 1416 (Salvatore Sanfilippo) 1417* [NEW] More reliable Cluster/Sentinel test becuase of timing errors and 1418 -LOADING errors. (Salvatore Sanfilippo) 1419 1420--[ Redis 3.2.0 RC1 (version 3.1.101) ] Release date: 23 dec 2015 1421 1422This is the first release candidate of Redis 3.2. The changelog above shows 1423what's new in this release. In the next of the following weeks we'll test 1424in depth every feature and we'll release new RCs as bugs are discovered 1425and fixed. Note that while 3.2 looks solid already, it contains many changes 1426to its internals. It's still fresh code compared to 3.0. 1427 1428General changes: 1429 1430* [NEW] Lua scripts "effect replication". Makes possible to write scripts 1431 with side effects, use of random commands, and so forth. 1432 (Salvatore Sanfilippo) 1433* [NEW] Lua scripts selective replication. Makes possible to replicate to 1434 slaves and AOF only selected parts of a script. (Design by 1435 Yossi Gottlieb and Salvatore Sanfilippo, implemented by Salvatore) 1436* [NEW] Geo indexing support via GEOADD, GEORADIUS and other commands. 1437 See http://redis.io/commands/geoadd for more information. 1438 (Initially implemented in a fork of Redis called "Ardb". 1439 Matt Stancliff "imported back" the work to Redis and created the 1440 initial API and implementation. Salvatore Sanfilippo modified 1441 the API and the implementation, fixed bugs, improved performances 1442 and unified the duplicated code with t_zset.c) 1443* [NEW] Lua debugger. A complete stepping, remote debugger for Lua scripts. 1444 Video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMvRfStaoyM 1445 (Salvatore Sanfilippo with many feedbacks and testing from 1446 Itamar Haber) 1447* [NEW] SDS improvements for speed and maximum string length. 1448 This makes Redis more memory efficient in different use cases. 1449 (Design and implementation by Oran Agra, some additional work 1450 by Salvatore Sanfilippo) 1451* [NEW] Modify Jemalloc size classes to make certain Redis objects fit 1452 better, improving memory efficiency. (Oran Agra) 1453* [NEW] Better consistency behavior between masters and slaves for expired 1454 keys. The slaves are only able to logically consider a key expired 1455 even before receiving the `DEL` command from the master. This avoids 1456 the delay there is sometimes between the natural expire of the key 1457 and the moment the slave is notified. (Salvatore Sanfilippo) 1458* [NEW] Support daemon supervision by upstart or systemd (Pierre-Yves Ritschard) 1459* [NEW] New encoding for the List type: Quicklists. Very important memory 1460 savings and storage space in RDB gains (up to 10x sometimes). 1461 (Design and implementation by Matt Stancliff. RDB storage reworked 1462 by Salvatore Sanfilippo) 1463* [NEW] SPOP with optional count argument. (Initial implementation by 1464 Alon Diamant, mostly reimplemented by Salvatore Sanfilippo for speed 1465 and in order to make the replication of a this class of commands, 1466 having as logical effect the execution of multiple commands, possible). 1467* [NEW] Support for RDB AUX fields. Now RDB files contain additional info 1468 like the creation date, version of Redis generating it and so forth. 1469 (Salvatore Sanfilippo) 1470* [NEW] Faster RDB loading via the RESIZEDB opcode to avoid useless hash tables 1471 rehashings. (Salvatore Sanfilippo) 1472* [NEW] HSTRLEN command. (@landmime and Salvatore Sanfilippo) 1473* [NEW] CONFIG SET/GET implementations refactored, partially rewritten, 1474 now exposing more config options. (Salvatore Sanfilippo) 1475* [NEW] CLUSTER NODES major speedup. (Salvatore Sanfilippo) 1476* [NEW] CLIENT KILL TYPE MASTER, to kill (disconnect) masters from slaves. 1477 (Salvatore Sanfilippo) 1478* [NEW] Jemalloc updated to 4.0.3 (Salvatore Sanfilippo) 1479* [NEW] DEBUG RESTART/CRASH-AND-RECOVER [delay] (Salvatore Sanfilippo) 1480* [NEW] CLIENT REPLY command implemented: ON, OFF and SKIP modes. 1481 (Salvatore Sanfilippo) 1482* [NEW] Crash report produced by Redis on crash improved. (Salvatore Sanfilippo) 1483* [NEW] Better memory test on crash. (Salvatore Sanfilippo) 1484 1485Redis Cluster changes: 1486 1487All the Redis Cluster changes in 3.2 were backported to 3.0, so there is 1488technically nothing new for now in this release. The most important things 1489are: 1490 1491* Cluster rebalancing. 1492* A pipelined MIGRATE command which is 10x faster and makes resharding 1493 and rebalancing faster. 1494* Improved replicas migration. 1495* As a side effect of quicklists encoding (see above items), moving big 1496 lists between nodes is now a lot faster. 1497 1498Redis Sentinel changes: 1499 1500* [NEW] Sentinel connection sharing. Makes Sentinels able to scale to 1501 monitor many masters. (Salvatore Sanfilippo) 1502* [NEW] New SENTINEL INFO-CACHE command. (Matt Stancliff) 1503* More things backported to Redis 3.0 in the past, so no longer news of 3.2. 1504 1505Migrating from 3.0 to 3.2 1506========================= 1507 1508Redis 3.0 is mostly a strict subset of 3.2, you should not have any problem 1509upgrading your application from 3.0 to 3.2. However this is a list of small 1510non-backward compatible changes introduced in the 3.2 release: 1511 1512* The default configuration file now binds to 127.0.0.1. 1513* Slaves try to no longer expose stale data about already expired keys. 1514* The RDB format changed. Redis 3.2 is still able to read 3.0 (and all the 1515 past versions) files, but not the other way around. 1516* Behavior on crash may be different. The crash log format changed and 1517 the memory test executed is now different. 1518 1519-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1520 1521Credits: For each release, a list of changes with the relative author is 1522provided. Where not specified the implementation and design is done by 1523Salvatore Sanfilippo. Thanks to Redis Labs for making all this possible. 1524Also many thanks to all the other contributors and the amazing community 1525we have. 1526 1527Commit messages may contain additional credits. 1528 1529Cheers, 1530Salvatore 1531
