It 16is free. There is no support or guarantee of any sort as to its 17operations, correctness, or whatever. If you do anything useful with 18all or parts of it you need to honor the copyright notices. It would 19also be nice to be acknowledged.
20 21
22 23
Acknowledgements
24 25The libtiff software was written by Sam Leffler while working for 26Silicon Graphics.
27 28The LZW algorithm is derived from the compress program (the proper 29attribution is included in the source code). The Group 3 fax stuff 30originated as code from Jef Poskanzer, but has since been rewritten 31several times. The latest version uses an algorithm from Frank 32Cringle -- consult libtiff/mkg3states.c and 33libtiff/tif_fax3.h for further information. 34The JPEG support was written by Tom Lane and is dependent on the 35excellent work of Tom Lane and the Independent JPEG Group (IJG) 36who distribute their work under friendly licensing similar to this 37software. 38Many other people have by now helped with bug fixes and code; a 39few of the more persistent contributors have been: 40 41
42 Bjorn P. In particular, users of the LZW compression 80within the TIFF framework. For this reason the TIFF 6.0 spec states 81that LZW compression is not recommended. It is unclear at this time 82what compression algorithm will be used in place of it. I have no idea 83what this means to you or to this library. I make no warranty or 84guarantees with regard to the LZW support in this library. 85 86
Use and Copyright
87 88

89Copyright (c) 1988-1997 Sam Leffler 90Copyright (c) 1991-1997 Silicon Graphics, Inc. 91 92Permission to use, copy, modify, distribute, and sell this software and 93its documentation for any purpose is hereby granted without fee, provided 94that (i) the above copyright notices and this permission notice appear in 95all copies of the software and related documentation, and (ii) the names of 96Sam Leffler and Silicon Graphics may not be used in any advertising or 97publicity relating to the software without the specific, prior written 98permission of Sam Leffler and Silicon Graphics. 99 100THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS-IS" AND WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, 101EXPRESS, IMPLIED OR OTHERWISE, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, ANY 102WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. 103 104IN NO EVENT SHALL SAM LEFFLER OR SILICON GRAPHICS BE LIABLE FOR 105ANY SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, INDIRECT OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES OF ANY KIND, 106OR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER RESULTING FROM LOSS OF USE, DATA OR PROFITS, 107WHETHER OR NOT ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF DAMAGE, AND ON ANY THEORY OF 108LIABILITY, ARISING OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE USE OR PERFORMANCE 109OF THIS SOFTWARE. 110

111 112
113
114 115 116Last updated: $Date: 2003-12-23 10:28:17 $ 117
118
119
