494c403f - perf header: Pass a perf_cpu rather than a PMU to get_cpuid_str

perf header: Pass a perf_cpu rather than a PMU to get_cpuid_strOn ARM the cpuid is dependent on the core type of the CPU inquestion. The PMU was passed for the sake of the CPU map but thismeans in places a temporary PMU is created just to pass a CPUvalue. Just pass the CPU and fix up the callers.As there are no longer PMU users in header.h, shuffle forwarddeclarations earlier to work around build failures.Reviewed-by: James Clark <james.clark@linaro.org>Signed-off-by: Ian Rogers <irogers@google.com>Tested-by: Xu Yang <xu.yang_2@nxp.com>Cc: Adrian Hunter <adrian.hunter@intel.com>Cc: Albert Ou <aou@eecs.berkeley.edu>Cc: Alexander Shishkin <alexander.shishkin@linux.intel.com>Cc: Alexandre Ghiti <alexghiti@rivosinc.com>Cc: Athira Rajeev <atrajeev@linux.vnet.ibm.com>Cc: Ben Zong-You Xie <ben717@andestech.com>Cc: Benjamin Gray <bgray@linux.ibm.com>Cc: Bibo Mao <maobibo@loongson.cn>Cc: Clément Le Goffic <clement.legoffic@foss.st.com>Cc: Dima Kogan <dima@secretsauce.net>Cc: Dr. David Alan Gilbert <linux@treblig.org>Cc: Huacai Chen <chenhuacai@kernel.org>Cc: Ingo Molnar <mingo@redhat.com>Cc: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org>Cc: John Garry <john.g.garry@oracle.com>Cc: Kan Liang <kan.liang@linux.intel.com>Cc: Leo Yan <leo.yan@linux.dev>Cc: Mark Rutland <mark.rutland@arm.com>Cc: Masami Hiramatsu <mhiramat@kernel.org>Cc: Mike Leach <mike.leach@linaro.org>Cc: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org>Cc: Palmer Dabbelt <palmer@dabbelt.com>Cc: Paul Walmsley <paul.walmsley@sifive.com>Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org>Cc: Ravi Bangoria <ravi.bangoria@amd.com>Cc: Sandipan Das <sandipan.das@amd.com>Cc: Will Deacon <will@kernel.org>Cc: Yicong Yang <yangyicong@hisilicon.com>Cc: linux-arm-kernel@lists.infradead.orgCc: linux-riscv@lists.infradead.orgLink: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20241107162035.52206-7-irogers@google.comSigned-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

89d64e72 - perf inject: Overhaul handling of pipe files

perf inject: Overhaul handling of pipe filesPreviously inject->is_pipe was set if the input or output were apipe. Determining the input was a pipe had to be done prior tostarting the session and opening the file. This was done by comparingthe input file name with '-' but it fails if the pipe file is writtento disk.Opening a pipe file from disk will correctly set perf_data.is_pipe, butthis is too late for 'perf inject' and results in a broken file. Aworkaround is 'cat pipe_perf|perf inject -i - ...'.This change removes inject->is_pipe and changes the dependentconditions to use the is_pipe flag on the input(inject->session->data) and output files (inject->output). Thisensures the is_pipe condition reflects things like the header beingread.The change removes the use of perf file header repiping, that iswriting the file header out while reading it in. The case of inputpipe and output file cannot repipe as the attributes for the file areunknown. To resolve this, write the file header when writing to diskand as the attributes may be unknown, write them after the data.Update sessions repipe variable to be trace_event_repipe as those arethe only events now impacted by it. Update __perf_session__new as therepipe_fd no longer needs passing. Fully removing repipe from sessionheader reading will be done in a later change.Committer testing: root@number:~# perf record -e syscalls:sys_enter_*sleep/max-stack=4/ -o - sleep 0.01 | perf report -i - # To display the perf.data header info, please use --header/--header-only options. # [ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ] [ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.050 MB - ] # # Total Lost Samples: 0 # # Samples: 1 of event 'syscalls:sys_enter_clock_nanosleep' # Event count (approx.): 1 # # Overhead Command Shared Object Symbol # ........ ....... ............. ............................... # 100.00% sleep libc.so.6 [.] clock_nanosleep@GLIBC_2.2.5 | ---__libc_start_main@@GLIBC_2.34 __libc_start_call_main 0x562fc2560a9f clock_nanosleep@GLIBC_2.2.5 # # (Tip: Create an archive with symtabs to analyse on other machine: perf archive) # root@number:~# perf record -e syscalls:sys_enter_*sleep/max-stack=4/ -o - sleep 0.01 > pipe.data [ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ] [ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.050 MB - ] root@number:~# perf report --stdio -i pipe.data # To display the perf.data header info, please use --header/--header-only options. # # # Total Lost Samples: 0 # # Samples: 1 of event 'syscalls:sys_enter_clock_nanosleep' # Event count (approx.): 1 # # Overhead Command Shared Object Symbol # ........ ....... ............. ............................... # 100.00% sleep libc.so.6 [.] clock_nanosleep@GLIBC_2.2.5 | ---__libc_start_main@@GLIBC_2.34 __libc_start_call_main 0x55f775975a9f clock_nanosleep@GLIBC_2.2.5 # # (Tip: To set sampling period of individual events use perf record -e cpu/cpu-cycles,period=100001/,cpu/branches,period=10001/ ...) # root@number:~#Signed-off-by: Ian Rogers <irogers@google.com>Tested-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>Cc: Adrian Hunter <adrian.hunter@intel.com>Cc: Alexander Shishkin <alexander.shishkin@linux.intel.com>Cc: Ingo Molnar <mingo@redhat.com>Cc: James Clark <james.clark@linaro.org>Cc: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org>Cc: Kan Liang <kan.liang@linux.intel.com>Cc: Mark Rutland <mark.rutland@arm.com>Cc: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org>Cc: Nick Terrell <terrelln@fb.com>Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org>Cc: Yanteng Si <siyanteng@loongson.cn>Cc: Yicong Yang <yangyicong@hisilicon.com>Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20240829150154.37929-7-irogers@google.comSigned-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

perf: Extract building cache level for a CPU into separate functionbuild_caches() builds the complete cache topology of the system byiterating over all CPU, building and comparing cache levels of each CPU,keeping only the unique ones at the end.Extract the unit that build the cache levels for a single CPU into aseparate function. Expose this function, and the MAX_CACHE_LVL value tobe used elsewhere in perf too.Signed-off-by: K Prateek Nayak <kprateek.nayak@amd.com>Acked-by: Ian Rogers <irogers@google.com>Cc: Alexander Shishkin <alexander.shishkin@linux.intel.com>Cc: Ananth Narayan <ananth.narayan@amd.com>Cc: Gautham Shenoy <gautham.shenoy@amd.com>Cc: Ingo Molnar <mingo@redhat.com>Cc: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org>Cc: Mark Rutland <mark.rutland@arm.com>Cc: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org>Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org>Cc: Ravi Bangoria <ravi.bangoria@amd.com>Cc: Sandipan Das <sandipan.das@amd.com>Cc: Stephane Eranian <eranian@google.com>Cc: Wen Pu <puwen@hygon.cn>Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20230517172745.5833-2-kprateek.nayak@amd.comSigned-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

perf build: Use libtraceevent from the systemRemove the LIBTRACEEVENT_DYNAMIC and LIBTRACEFS_DYNAMIC make commandline variables.If libtraceevent isn't installed or NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 is passed to thebuild, don't compile in libtraceevent and libtracefs support.This also disables CONFIG_TRACE that controls "perf trace".CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT is used to control enablement in Build/Makefiles,HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT is used in C code.Without HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT tracepoints are disabled and as such thecommands kmem, kwork, lock, sched and timechart are removed. Simplification here to avoid these two ways of disabling builtin-trace.c and not having CONFIG_TRACE=y when libtraceevent-devel isn't installed is the clean way.From Athira:<quote>tools/perf/arch/powerpc/util/Build-perf-y += kvm-stat.o+perf-$(CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT) += kvm-stat.o</quote>Then, ditto for arm64 and s390, detected by container cross build tests.- s/390 uses test__checkevent_tracepoint() that is now only available if HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT is defined, enclose the callsite with ifder HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT.Also from Athira:<quote>With this change, I could successfully compile in these environment:- Without libtraceevent-devel installed- With libtraceevent-devel installed- With “make NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1”</quote>Then, finally rename CONFIG_TRACEEVENT to CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT forconsistency with other libraries detected in tools/perf/.Signed-off-by: Ian Rogers <irogers@google.com>Tested-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>Tested-by: Athira Rajeev <atrajeev@linux.vnet.ibm.com>Cc: Alexander Shishkin <alexander.shishkin@linux.intel.com>Cc: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org>Cc: Mark Rutland <mark.rutland@arm.com>Cc: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org>Cc: Nick Desaulniers <ndesaulniers@google.com>Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org>Cc: Stephane Eranian <eranian@google.com>Cc: bpf@vger.kernel.orgLink: http://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20221205225940.3079667-3-irogers@google.comSigned-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

perf inject: Adjust output data offset for backward compatibilityWhen 'perf inject' creates a new file, it reuses the data offset fromthe input file. If there has been a change on the size of the header, ashappened in v5.12 -> v5.13, the new offsets will be wrong, resulting ina corrupted output file.This change adds the function perf_session__data_offset to compute thedata offset based on the current header size, and uses that instead ofthe offset from the original input file.Signed-off-by: Raul Silvera <rsilvera@google.com>Acked-by: Adrian Hunter <adrian.hunter@intel.com>Cc: Alexander Shishkin <alexander.shishkin@linux.intel.com>Cc: Athira Jajeev <atrajeev@linux.vnet.ibm.com>Cc: Colin Ian King <colin.king@intel.com>Cc: Dave Marchevsky <davemarchevsky@fb.com>Cc: Ian Rogers <irogers@google.com>Cc: Ingo Molnar <mingo@redhat.com>Cc: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org>Cc: Mark Rutland <mark.rutland@arm.com>Cc: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org>Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org>Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20220621152725.2668041-1-rsilvera@google.comSigned-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

perf header: Record non-CPU PMU capabilitiesPMUs advertise their capabilities via sysfs attribute files butthe perf tool currently parses only core(CPU) or hybrid core PMUcapabilities. Add support of recording non-core PMU capabilitiesint perf.data header.Note that a newly proposed HEADER_PMU_CAPS is replacing existingHEADER_HYBRID_CPU_PMU_CAPS. Special care is taken for hybrid corePMUs by writing their capabilities first in the perf.data headerto make sure new perf.data file being read by old perf tool doesnot break.Reviewed-by: Kan Liang <kan.liang@linux.intel.com>Signed-off-by: Ravi Bangoria <ravi.bangoria@amd.com>Acked-by: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org>Cc: Ananth Narayan <ananth.narayan@amd.com>Cc: Andi Kleen <ak@linux.intel.com>Cc: Borislav Petkov <bp@alien8.de>Cc: Ian Rogers <irogers@google.com>Cc: Ingo Molnar <mingo@redhat.com>Cc: James Clark <james.clark@arm.com>Cc: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org>Cc: Kim Phillips <kim.phillips@amd.com>Cc: Leo Yan <leo.yan@linaro.org>Cc: Mark Rutland <mark.rutland@arm.com>Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org>Cc: Robert Richter <rrichter@amd.com>Cc: Sandipan Das <sandipan.das@amd.com>Cc: Santosh Shukla <santosh.shukla@amd.com>Cc: Stephane Eranian <eranian@google.com>Cc: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de>Cc: like.xu.linux@gmail.comCc: x86@kernel.orgLink: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20220604044519.594-6-ravi.bangoria@amd.comSigned-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

In function "parse_setup_cpu_list",There is check to see if cpu number is greater than max cpu's possiblein the system ie via "if (bind_cpu_0 >= g->p.nr_cpus || bind_cpu_1 >=g->p.nr_cpus) {".But it could happen that system has say 48 CPU's, but only number ofonline CPU's is 0-7. Other CPU's are offlined. Since "g->p.nr_cpus" is48, so function will go ahead and set bit for CPU 8 also in cpumask (td->bind_cpumask).bind_to_cpumask function is called to set affinity usingsched_setaffinity and the cpumask. Since the CPU8 is not present, setaffinity will fail here with EINVAL.Fix this issue by adding a check to make sure that, CPU's provided inthe input argument values are online before proceeding further and skipthe test. For this, include new helper function "is_cpu_online" in"tools/perf/util/header.c".Since "BIT(x)" definition will get included from header.h, removethat from bench/numa.cReported-by: Disha Goel <disgoel@linux.vnet.ibm.com>Signed-off-by: Athira Jajeev <atrajeev@linux.vnet.ibm.com>Tested-by: Disha Goel <disgoel@linux.vnet.ibm.com>Cc: Ian Rogers <irogers@google.com>Cc: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org>Cc: Kajol Jain <kjain@linux.ibm.com>Cc: Madhavan Srinivasan <maddy@linux.vnet.ibm.com>Cc: Michael Ellerman <mpe@ellerman.id.au>Cc: Nageswara R Sastry <rnsastry@linux.ibm.com>Cc: Srikar Dronamraju <srikar@linux.vnet.ibm.com>Cc: linuxppc-dev@lists.ozlabs.orgLink: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20220412164059.42654-2-atrajeev@linux.vnet.ibm.comSigned-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

perf tools: Pass a fd to perf_file_header__read_pipe()Currently it unconditionally writes to stdout for repipe. But perfinject can direct its output to a regular file. Then it needs towrite the header to the file as well.Signed-off-by: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org>Acked-by: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@redhat.com>Cc: Adrian Hunter <adrian.hunter@intel.com>Cc: Andi Kleen <ak@linux.intel.com>Cc: Ian Rogers <irogers@google.com>Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org>Link: http://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20210719223153.1618812-3-namhyung@kernel.orgSigned-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

e119083b - perf header: Support HYBRID_CPU_PMU_CAPS feature

perf header: Support HYBRID_CPU_PMU_CAPS featurePerf has supported the CPU_PMU_CAPS feature to display a list of CPU PMUcapabilities. But on a hybrid platform, it may have several CPU PMUs (suchas "cpu_core" and "cpu_atom"). The CPU_PMU_CAPS feature is hard to extendto support multiple CPU PMUs well if it needs to be compatible for the caseof old perf data file + new perf tool.So for better compatibility we now create a new feature HYBRID_CPU_PMU_CAPSin the header.For the perf.data generated on hybrid platform, root@otcpl-adl-s-2:~# perf report --header-only -I # cpu_core pmu capabilities: branches=32, max_precise=3, pmu_name=alderlake_hybrid # cpu_atom pmu capabilities: branches=32, max_precise=3, pmu_name=alderlake_hybrid # missing features: TRACING_DATA BRANCH_STACK GROUP_DESC AUXTRACE STAT CLOCKID DIR_FORMAT COMPRESSED CPU_PMU_CAPS CLOCK_DATAFor the perf.data generated on non-hybrid platform root@kbl-ppc:~# perf report --header-only -I # cpu pmu capabilities: branches=32, max_precise=3, pmu_name=skylake # missing features: TRACING_DATA BRANCH_STACK GROUP_DESC AUXTRACE STAT CLOCKID DIR_FORMAT COMPRESSED CLOCK_DATA HYBRID_TOPOLOGY HYBRID_CPU_PMU_CAPSSigned-off-by: Jin Yao <yao.jin@linux.intel.com>Acked-by: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@redhat.com>Cc: Alexander Shishkin <alexander.shishkin@linux.intel.com>Cc: Andi Kleen <ak@linux.intel.com>Cc: Jin Yao <yao.jin@intel.com>Cc: Kan Liang <kan.liang@linux.intel.com>Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org>Link: http://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20210514122948.9472-3-yao.jin@linux.intel.comSigned-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

perf header: Support HYBRID_TOPOLOGY featureIt is useful to let the user know about the hybrid topology.Add the HYBRID_TOPOLOGY feature in header to indicate the core CPUsand the atom CPUs.With this patch a perf.data generated on a hybrid platform reportsthe hybrid CPU list: root@otcpl-adl-s-2:~# perf report --header-only -I ... # hybrid cpu system: # cpu_core cpu list : 0-15 # cpu_atom cpu list : 16-23For a perf.data generated on a non-hybrid platform, reports a messagethat HYBRID_TOPOLOGY is missing: root@kbl-ppc:~# perf report --header-only -I ... # missing features: TRACING_DATA BRANCH_STACK GROUP_DESC AUXTRACE STAT CLOCKID DIR_FORMAT COMPRESSED CLOCK_DATA HYBRID_TOPOLOGYSigned-off-by: Jin Yao <yao.jin@linux.intel.com>Acked-by: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@redhat.com>Cc: Alexander Shishkin <alexander.shishkin@linux.intel.com>Cc: Andi Kleen <ak@linux.intel.com>Cc: Jin Yao <yao.jin@intel.com>Cc: Kan Liang <kan.liang@linux.intel.com>Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org>Link: http://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20210514122948.9472-2-yao.jin@linux.intel.comSigned-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

perf header: Store clock references for -k/--clockid optionAdd a new CLOCK_DATA feature that stores reference times when-k/--clockid option is specified.It contains the clock id and its reference time together with wall clocktime taken at the 'same time', both values are in nanoseconds.The format of data is as below:  struct {       u32 version;  /* version = 1 */       u32 clockid;       u64 wall_clock_ns;       u64 clockid_time_ns;  };This clock reference times will be used in following changes to displaywall clock for perf events.It's available only for recording with clockid specified, because it'sthe only case where we can get reference time to wallclock time. It'scan't do that with perf clock yet.Committer testing:  $ perf record -h -k   Usage: perf record [<options>] [<command>]      or: perf record [<options>] -- <command> [<options>]      -k, --clockid <clockid>                            clockid to use for events, see clock_gettime()  $ perf record -k monotonic sleep 1  [ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ]  [ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.017 MB perf.data (8 samples) ]  $ perf report --header-only | grep clockid -A1  # event : name = cycles:u, , id = { 88815, 88816, 88817, 88818, 88819, 88820, 88821, 88822 }, size = 120, { sample_period, sample_freq } = 4000, sample_type = IP|TID|TIME|PERIOD, read_format = ID, disabled = 1, inherit = 1, exclude_kernel = 1, mmap = 1, comm = 1, freq = 1, enable_on_exec = 1, task = 1, precise_ip = 3, sample_id_all = 1, exclude_guest = 1, mmap2 = 1, comm_exec = 1, use_clockid = 1, ksymbol = 1, bpf_event = 1, clockid = 1  # CPU_TOPOLOGY info available, use -I to display  --  # clockid frequency: 1000 MHz  # cpu pmu capabilities: branches=32, max_precise=3, pmu_name=skylake  # clockid: monotonic (1)  # reference time: 2020-08-06 09:40:21.619290 = 1596717621.619290 (TOD) = 21931.077673635 (monotonic)  $Original-patch-by: David Ahern <dsahern@gmail.com>Signed-off-by: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org>Tested-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>Cc: Alexander Shishkin <alexander.shishkin@linux.intel.com>Cc: Andi Kleen <ak@linux.intel.com>Cc: David Ahern <dsahern@gmail.com>Cc: Geneviève Bastien <gbastien@versatic.net>Cc: Ian Rogers <irogers@google.com>Cc: Jeremie Galarneau <jgalar@efficios.com>Cc: Michael Petlan <mpetlan@redhat.com>Cc: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org>Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org>Cc: Wang Nan <wangnan0@huawei.com>Link: http://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20200805093444.314999-4-jolsa@kernel.orgSigned-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>
